Cutting Oils
Cutting oils are cutting fluids that are used in manufacturing to cool and lubricate machining cutting tools. They are typically petroleum based, soluble oils that form emulsions upon mixing with water, which provides cooling and lubrication for tooling during metalworking operations. Often cutting oils are enhanced with EP additives to improve finishes, enable the cutting of hard metals, and lengthen tool life. Many cutting oils are made transparent, so processes are more easily observed. Active oils are cutting oils that chemically react, or stain certain metals.
Cutting oils are used for virtually every kind of machining. Tapping, turning, drilling, boring, grinding, sawing, shaping, and other processes all benefit from the lubrication and protection provided by cutting oils.
The characteristics of good cutting oils include the ability to:
- keep the work material at a stable temperature - especially crucial when working to close tolerances
- optimize the service of the cutting tip by lubricating the working edge and reducing tip welding
- provide for the safety of the environment and people using it
- prevent rust on cutters and machine parts
