TECHNICAL TOPIC – OIL ANALYSIS BASICS
Lubricating oils are commonly called the life-blood of machinery. Doctors use blood testing and analysis to monitor our health – similarly, maintenance mechanics can use oil analysis to monitor machinery conditions. Problematic lubricant or equipment symptoms show up as indicators in oil analysis results and can lead to equipment failure and lost productivity. The goal of a proactive oil analysis program is to trend gradual changes in fluid properties, contaminants and wear debris so that corrective action can be performed in an efficient manner.
Oil Analysis Assists Maintenance Personnel in Two Primary Ways
First - Determining the physical condition and/or contamination of the oil. Lubricant serviceability can be impacted by either reaching the lubricant's life span or contamination levels have reached a point requiring a drain and refill, unless purification is available. When talking about contaminants, the objective is to detect the presence of foreign components and to ask "What are they? Where did they come from? How can I prevent further entry?" Contaminants act as a vehicle for wear. This generated wear debris further acts as a mechanism for additional component wear.
Second - Monitoring wear metals for abnormal machinery conditions. Wear debris analysis relates specifically to the health of your equipment. As you know, the main function of a lubricant is to separate two surfaces, in relative motion to each other, from making contact. However, it is generally impractical to maintain a lubricant film that will keep those same surfaces totally separated from each other. Correspondingly, metal-to-metal contact can occur, even in today's high-tech equipment.
Testing
The following primary tests are used to determine changes in physical properties of the oil, contamination and equipment wear debris:
Viscosity: indicates changes in fluid's resistance to flow. Viscosity results can indicate either physical changes or contamination by other fluids.
Oxidation by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer): identifies harmful by-products of thermal degradation. Lubrication oxidation represents a physical change.
Water by Hot Plate/Karl Fisher: identifies the presence of water, a common and potentially harmful fluid contaminant that can accelerate physical change and rapidly degrade metal surfaces.
Total Acid Number (TAN): measures/identifies acid by-products of oxidation and contamination. TAN is a physical lubricant change.
Elemental Analysis by ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy): identifies both additive and wear debris metals.
Total Base Number (TBN): identifies acid neutralizing capacity. This is a physical lubricant change.
ISO Particle Count: identifies the size and amount of solid contaminants.
Suburban Oil Reliability Specialists can assist in selecting additional tests to monitor specific equipment issues as conditions warrant.
Starting Your Program
By now, you can see the importance of an oil analysis program, but where to start can be overwhelming. Here's a seven-step process to help you identify major program elements:
Step 1: Identify "Critical" Equipment
It's not necessary to perform oil analysis on every single lubricated system in your plant. Identify critical applications that would seriously jeopardize production if they were to shut down unexpectedly.
Step 2: Register Your Equipment
It is important to have your equipment properly registered with a lab. This supports routine trending and plays an important role in early detection of lubricant or equipment problems.
Step 3: Establish Sampling Best Practices
Establish a consistent "how-to" practice for taking oil samples from your equipment and train your maintenance personnel to use this practice. Correct sampling practices are critical to the value received from the analysis data. This extremely important step rarely gets the attention it needs.
Step 4: Sample
Obtain samples in accordance with your established best practices and send them to the lab as soon as possible.
Step 5: Analyze
A thorough analysis, with appropriate trending, helps determine your systems' conditions.
Step 6: Interpret
Reviewing the results and determining what, if any, action is required can make or break your oil analysis program. Suburban Oil Reliability Specialists have the knowledge and experience to help you interpret your oil analysis results.
Step 7: Take Corrective Action and Maintain Documentation of Your Actions
As always, documentation is the key to knowing where you've been and where you're going. Document corrective actions resulting from oil analysis. For new equipment, historical oil analysis and corrective action documentation may assist with warranty claims should an equipment issue arise.
Summary
Oil analysis is a useful service that can help prevent equipment breakdowns, determine the root cause of failures and aid in locating operating and/or contamination problems. If you would like help implementing an oil analysis program, our Reliability Specialists are ready to assists. Please ask your sales representative, or call us at 1-800-562-2861, for further information.

Mobil Delvac 1300 Super - A Simple Solution for a Diverse Fleet
“We have more than 130 vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment in our fleet that must be ready to roll on a moments notice,” said Ted Price, Director of Fleet Maintenance for Union Power Cooperative.
Yes, for more than 25 years, the entire service fleet at Union Power has relied on Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 heavy duty diesel engine oil. In that time, “we have never experienced equipment failure due to engine problems or oil consumption,” Price said. “To realize how impressive that is, you have to remember that our trucks and equipment often run idle for several hours and are also exposed to extreme operating conditions when hydraulic lifts and drilling equipment are in use in the field.”
“Mobil Delvac 1300 Super is formulated to provide outstanding levels of protection for all diesel engines across a broad range of on-highway and off-highway applications,” said Yeong Kwon, product offer advisor, commercial vehicle lubricants, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties.
“Mobil Delvac can help deliver performance beyond the boundaries of conventional oils because its formulation includes Trimer Core chemistry – a powerful additive technology that resists oil degradation, reduces sludge build up and prevents wear, ultimately extending drain intervals and engine life.” Some fleet maintenance managers think working with premium oils means high tech or complex maintenance programs, however, that is not the case. "We stick with a basic oil drain interval of 250 hours on every piece of equipment in our fleet," said Price."It's that simple." To help enhance fleet performance and keep up with the latest trends in engine design and lubrication technology, Union Power has, for more than 11 years, turned to Mobil lubricants.

Announcing 2010 Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Suburban Oil Company has added BlueDEF Diesel Exhaust Fluid to our inventory for immediate distribution to our network of customers. BlueDEF is certified by the American Petroleum Institute for medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks to meet EPA 2010 diesel engine requirements.
Diesel exhaust fluid is one of the key elements of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process used by most medium and heavy-duty engine builders to meet EPA 2010 regulation.
BlueDEF is a nontoxic solution of 67.5% purified water and 32.5% ultra pure automotive grade urea. BlueDEF is not a fuel or fuel additive. Instead, when injected into the exhaust stream and passed over a catalyst, BlueDEF helps convert NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor - two harmless and natural components of the air we breathe.
BlueDEF is stable, colorless and odorless, and meets ISO Standards 22241 for purity and composition and is an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified diesel exhaust fluid. These are the highest quality and safety standards in place to ensure optimum SCR performance.
Making sure you do not run out of BlueDEF in a SCR equipped truck is simple, watch the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) gauge, which is part of the diesel fuel gauge, for when it is time to refill.
DEF is stored in a dedicated tank next to the fuel tank on the driver's side. The tanks range in size from 6 to 23 gallons depending on the truck's application. The DEF tank fill opening is designed to accommodate a DEF fill nozzle to ensure only DEF is put into the tank. A diesel fuel nozzle will not fit into the DEF tank opening.
How much DEF will my truck use?
One gallon of BlueDEF is used approximately every 300 miles. A truck with a 20 gallon DEF tank can go up to 6,000 miles between fill-ups.
Will a truck quit if it runs out of DEF?
No. An engine will not be shut down or be unable to restart as a result of running out of BlueDEF. However, if the DEF tank is empty, engine horsepower will de-rate and BlueDEF should be added to the tank.
Will DEF freeze in cold weather?
BlueDEF begins freezing at 12 degrees Fahrenheit. If DEF freezes, the engine will start and run properly (no de-rate or malfunctioning lights). A DEF tank heater will thaw the fluid for use and at no point will this affect the operation of the engine.
